Sunshine Place, the little village with Good Energy, aims to change minds about renewable energy.

For too long, heat pumps and solar panels have been viewed as futuristic technologies reserved for early adopters with surplus cash, not compatible with rural British life or with lower means to pay the upfront costs.

We’re bringing this to life by transforming Southsea Model Village, complete with houses and businesses, using Good Energy’s cutting-edge solutions. By showing these systems in action (on a small scale), we’re proving that clean, renewable energy isn’t just for the few, it’s for everyone.

Visitors will see how these small changes can make a huge impact, shattering misconceptions and inspiring a new way of thinking about energy.

What we’re calling for

We have written to some of the top MPs, including the Secretary of State for Energy Ed Miliband, asking for the following policies which would help small scale solutions make a big difference to the country’s clean power goals.

Revisit the Sunshine Bill

You say you want a rooftop revolution? Well, you know putting solar on the 1.5 million new homes the government has committed to getting built would create 6GW of capacity and enough exported clean power for a further 1.1 million homes.

Reduce electricity costs

The UK has one of the biggest differences between electricity and gas costs in Europe. Take policy costs off electricity and move them to general taxation, lowering everyone’s bills and making it much more cost efficient to heat a home with a heat pump.

More targeted support

The up front cost for solar and heat pumps remain the primary blocker for households, especially those on lower incomes. We can’t risk creating a more unequal energy system as we decarbonise. The Warm Homes Plan will help and the BUS grant is available, but we would like to see more targeted measures of support for solar especially.
